September 25, 2024 – TikTok has announced that it will be shutting down its music streaming service, TikTok Music, on November 28, 2024. After this date, access to TikTok Music, including login, subscriptions, and all other features, will no longer be available. The company has stated that user account information and personal data will be automatically deleted following the closure.
According to TikTok, the decision to discontinue the music streaming service stems from a shift in strategy, as the company no longer intends to compete in the music streaming market. Instead, TikTok will focus on directing users to other platforms through its “Add to Music App” feature, which was introduced last year. This feature allows users to save their favorite songs from TikTok to playlists on partner services such as Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon.
The closure of TikTok Music marks the end of ByteDance’s attempt to capitalize on TikTok’s massive influence and music fanbase to create a successful music streaming service. While TikTok videos have been instrumental in driving the popularity of numerous hit songs and emerging artists, the platform’s use of music has also led to conflicts with record labels seeking higher usage fees.
TikTok Music originally launched in 2019 under the name Resso and was available in Brazil, Indonesia, Australia, Mexico, and Singapore. However, despite its initial promise, the service has ultimately failed to gain traction in the competitive music streaming landscape.
