India Launches Investigation into Fire at Tata’s iPhone Parts Factory

September 30, 2024 – A devastating fire broke out at the Tata Electronics iPhone component factory in southern India on September 28th, resulting in a complete halt of production. Authorities in Tamil Nadu have initiated an investigation into the incident.

According to reports, the blaze originated in a section of the plant designated for storing chemicals. Although the fire has been fully extinguished, the aftermath left at least 10 workers requiring medical attention. Among them, 2 were hospitalized due to smoke inhalation but have since been discharged.

KM Sarayu, a senior local administrative officer, stated that rescue teams need time to assess the situation as smoke continues to billow out due to chemical hazards.

Officials from Tata Electronics have expressed their commitment to investigating the cause of the fire and implementing measures to ensure employee safety. A forensic team from Chennai will also be joining the investigation.

The incident has disrupted Apple’s supply chain, as the company increasingly relies on suppliers in India, Vietnam, and Brazil for iPhone production.

It remains unclear whether the fire has damaged any of the surrounding buildings at the Tata factory, including one structure that was scheduled to commence iPhone assembly by the end of 2024.
