EU Pressures Apple to Open Up Core iOS Features

December 20, 2024 – The European Union (EU) has demanded that Apple make adjustments to its iOS operating system, aiming to enhance compatibility between iPhones and third-party devices such as smartwatches and wireless headphones.

The EU is pushing for Apple to open up iOS features like notifications, AirPlay, and AirDrop to third-party manufacturers. This move is intended to foster innovation in the market and improve the user experience.

Notably, the EU has released a comprehensive list specifying the functions that Apple must expose to third-party developers. This list encompasses a wide range of technologies, from Wi-Fi connectivity to file transfer capabilities, and even device-to-device video streaming.

Apple has expressed concerns that complying with these requests could potentially expose user data to unauthorized access. The company alleges that if it were to grant such access, apps like those from Meta could theoretically gain access to sensitive user information, including messages, emails, phone calls, app usage, photos, files, calendars, and passwords.

Meta, on the other hand, counters that Apple is using privacy as a smokescreen to deflect from its anti-competitive practices. Meta further points out that it has made more interoperability requests than any other company, highlighting the need for greater compatibility.

If Apple fails to comply with the EU’s Digital Markets Act, it could face penalties of up to 10% of its global annual turnover. The EU has indicated that it will initiate an investigation if Apple does not adhere to the new rules by next year.
