March 5, 2025 – OpenAI has announced the launch of NextGenAI, an innovative alliance composed of 15 leading research institutions. This coalition aims to harness the power of artificial intelligence to drive scientific breakthroughs and transform education.

According to the official announcement, the founding partners of NextGenAI include, besides OpenAI itself, California Institute of Technology, the California State University System, Duke University, University of Georgia, Harvard University, Howard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Michigan, University of Mississippi, Ohio State University, University of Oxford, Sciences Po, Texas A&M University, as well as Boston Children’s Hospital and Boston Public Library.

OpenAI emphasized that artificial intelligence has the potential to advance scientific research and education, but this can only be achieved if people have access to the right tools. To this end, OpenAI has committed to providing $50 million in research grants, computing resources, and API support to assist students, educators, and researchers in pushing the boundaries of knowledge.

Brad Lightcap, the Chief Operating Officer of OpenAI, stated, “The progress of AI today would not be possible without the years of dedication from the academic community. Continuing this collaboration is crucial to building AI that benefits all of humanity. NextGenAI will accelerate the pace of scientific research and give rise to a new generation of institutions that can fully harness the transformative power of AI.”

NextGenAI is designed to support scientists searching for cures, scholars unveiling new knowledge, and students mastering AI for the future.
