Google CEO Hints at AI’s Future: The Illusion of Consciousness

May 28, 2024 – In a recent interview with YouTube tech creator Hayls World, Google CEO Sundar Pichai discussed various aspects of the ongoing AI revolution and unveiled Google’s vision for artificial intelligence.

Echoing Elon Musk’s sentiment that AI could make many jobs “redundant”, Pichai also emphasized the pervasive impact of AI in the near future.

When asked about the advantages of Google’s AI, Pichai highlighted its seamless integration with Google search and other products as a key strength. “For instance,” he explained, “it can summarize emails in Gmail, making it easier to send emails, and it integrates well with other Google products like YouTube. Plus, it’s multimodal, meaning you’ll be able to operate AI using voice commands in the future.”

Addressing the topic of AI consciousness, Pichai noted that while AI might give the illusion of consciousness in the coming years, making it hard to distinguish, there’s a difference between that and true consciousness, which he described as a “very deep philosophical question”.

Pichai envisions a world where AI becomes a helpful assistant in people’s daily work. “Just like how Google Docs corrects your spelling and grammar,” he said, “AI will assist you in almost everything you do. For example, if you’re preparing for an interview, you can discuss with AI how to improve, and it won’t even feel odd.”
