Google Withdraws Antitrust Complaint Against Microsoft Just a Week into EU Probe

November 29, 2025 – According to a recent report from Reuters, Google has withdrawn its antitrust complaint against Microsoft’s cloud – service business practices in the European Union.

Just a week prior, EU regulatory authorities had announced the launch of an investigation into the cloud – computing industry. The main focus of this investigation was to determine whether Microsoft should be placed under a more stringent regulatory framework.

Last year, Google filed a complaint with the European Commission, alleging that Microsoft was using business tactics to make it difficult for its customers to switch away from its Azure cloud platform, thereby disrupting the competitive landscape. Market research data shows that in the current global cloud – service market, Amazon holds a 30% share, Microsoft accounts for 20%, and Google has a 13% share.

Giorgia Abeltino, the head of government affairs and public policy for Google Cloud in Europe, stated on Friday, “In light of the European Commission’s recent announcement that it will assess the issues in the cloud – computing sector through a separate process, Google has decided to withdraw the complaint.”

She also emphasized that Google will continue to collaborate with policymakers, customers, and regulatory bodies in the EU, the UK, and other regions to promote openness and choice in the cloud market.

It is worth noting that the European Commission is currently investigating features in the cloud – computing industry that may strengthen the market positions of Microsoft Azure and Amazon AWS. As planned, this one – year investigation will evaluate whether these two companies should be regarded as “gatekeepers” under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). If so, they will be required to comply with a set of behavioral rules aimed at promoting market competition and expanding user options.
