Smart Roadster’s Potential Return: Execs Say ‘No Rush’ for Now

June 19, 2025 – Smart is reportedly gearing up to introduce a new generation of its iconic ForTwo city car, a move that could potentially pave the way for the return of the Smart Roadster, as reported by Auto Express on the 16th.

The Roadster, which made its debut in 2003, was a compact and lightweight two-seater sports car that garnered widespread acclaim for its balanced mid-engine layout. Even F1 legend Gordon Murray chose it as his daily driver, a testament to its charm and performance.

In a recent interview, Jason Albart, the CEO of Smart UK, was asked about the possibility of a new-generation Roadster. He responded with a smile, “We had one at home, and it was a blast to drive. Despite the UK being one of the rainiest countries in Europe, we have a soft spot for coupés and roadsters. I believe there’s still a market for such vehicles here.”

However, Albart was also candid about the current lack of concrete plans to revive the Roadster. Instead, Smart’s immediate focus is on the upcoming Smart #5 SUV, the brand’s largest model to date, which is expected to hit the market this year.

Following the #5, Smart is set to unveil a new all-electric hatchback, the Smart #6, in the coming months.

The next two years are set to witness a wave of electrification among classic sports cars. Alpine A110, for instance, is slated to make its debut in 2026 with a weight under 1.5 tons and advanced in-wheel motor technology. Porsche’s Boxster and Cayman will also bid farewell to their gasoline engines in their next iterations, joining the likes of the Lotus Emira and Mazda MX-5 in the electric transition.

As for the next-generation Roadster, its appearance remains a mystery. Nevertheless, industry observers speculate that it could retain the original’s signature long wheelbase, four-wheel-to-the-corners stance, rearward-biased cabin, and long hood, along with classic elements like contrasting side panels and a roll cage.

Yet, Albart expressed doubts about whether electric sports cars would resonate with Roadster enthusiasts. “People who drive these cars are often traditionalists. Many still crave the sound of the engine, which is part of the open-top driving experience. There might be a new audience out there with a different perspective on electric Roadsters, but it’s hard to say who the real buyers will be at this stage. We’ll need more time to observe,” he said.
