Renault CEO de Meo’s Sudden Departure: Eyes on Kering’s CEO Role

June 17, 2025 – Luca de Meo, the Chief Executive Officer of Renault Group, has revealed his intention to step down from his position effective July 15, aiming to “explore new challenges outside the automotive sector.”

According to Le Figaro, de Meo is set to take on the role of CEO at Kering, the parent company of Gucci. However, Kering has declined to comment on the report from the French newspaper.

During his five – year tenure at Renault, de Meo managed to turn around the struggling French automaker. He initiated significant reforms in Renault’s two – decade – long strategic alliance with Nissan. The company also increased its investment in hybrid technology and made a strategic shift towards electric vehicles.

Renault issued a statement confirming de Meo’s decision to leave, stating that he wished to pursue new opportunities beyond the automotive industry.

Earlier reports indicated that Renault Group and Nissan announced a new strategic cooperation project in April this year. Renault is set to acquire 100% control of RNAIPL by buying Nissan’s current 51% stake. Nissan, on the other hand, has chosen Renault to develop and produce a derivative model of the Twingo, with Nissan taking charge of the design.

Furthermore, the New Alliance Agreement between the two companies will be revised. The locked – in commitment ratio for cross – shareholding will be reduced from the current 15% to 10%, enhancing the flexibility of both parties in this aspect.

Financial reports show that Renault Group had a strong performance in the first quarter of 2025. The group’s revenue reached 11.675 billion euros, while its automotive business revenue stood at 10.128 billion euros. The product portfolio contributed a solid 3.7 percentage points to the overall performance. In terms of sales, Renault Group sold 564,980 vehicles in the first quarter of this year, marking a year – on – year increase of 2.9%.
