February 5, 2025 – Following a turbulent nine-month period, audio technology company Sonos is gearing up for a comeback with the launch of its new streaming player, codenamed “Pinewood”, marking its entry into the video streaming market, as reported by tech media outlet The Verge.
Built on the Android TV system, Pinewood boasts a sleek interface that integrates content from multiple platforms including Netflix, Max, and Disney+. The device also features cross-platform search capabilities, along with the integration of Sonos Voice Control and a remote control equipped with quick access buttons for streaming applications.

According to sources, Pinewood doubles as an HDMI switcher, offering multiple HDMI ports and pass-through functionality to connect external devices like gaming consoles and Blu-ray players. This innovation addresses common issues such as audio sync delays and signal loss that have been experienced when connecting the Sonos Soundbar to televisions.
Furthermore, Pinewood allows users to build a true surround sound system using other Sonos speakers. For instance, two Era 300 speakers can be utilized to create left and right channels, enabling a more advanced Dolby Atmos setup.
In terms of connectivity, Pinewood is equipped with Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi 7, positioning it in the high-end market with an estimated price range between 200and400.
Pinewood is the brainchild of Sonos’ Chief Innovation Officer, Nick Millington, and was initially developed by the company’s advanced team, Studio 110. However, its success in the highly competitive streaming player market remains uncertain.
The device’s launch also comes in the wake of disappointing sales of Sonos’ previously released Ace headphones, casting a shadow over Pinewood’s future. While positive reviews of the Arc Ultra have helped to boost company morale, employees remain apprehensive about potential layoffs and skeptical about whether leadership changes will bring meaningful improvements.
As Sonos’ newly appointed interim CEO, Tom Conrad, prepares to host his first earnings call, he is expected to emphasize the priority of improving the company’s criticized mobile application. However, the bigger question remains how he will articulate Sonos’ future strategy and the pivotal role Pinewood will play in it. Whether this new product can lead Sonos out of its current predicament is something the industry is eagerly watching.
