October 16, 2023 – OpenAI has quietly made significant changes to its “core values” list, placing a previously unlisted term, General Artificial Intelligence (AGI), at the forefront, underscoring its strong commitment to AGI.
As per a screenshot captured in the media on September 25, 2022, OpenAI’s job page listed six core values for its employees to adhere to: Bold, Deliberate, Humble, Impact, Collaborative, and Growth. However, these values have now been replaced with a new set of five, with “AGI Focus” taking the top spot. OpenAI’s official website states: “We are committed to building safe and beneficial AGI that will have a tremendous positive impact on the future of humanity. Anything that does not align with this goal is out of scope for us.”
The remaining four values are described as Competitive and Tenacious, Scalable, Delight Users, and Team Spirit.
It’s worth noting that earlier this year, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, defined AGI in broad terms as “systems that are generally smarter than humans,” but in a recent interview published last month in The New Yorker, he downgraded the assessment of AGI, likening it to “a mediocre human that you can hire as a co-worker.”
OpenAI has already developed groundbreaking and influential AI systems such as ChatGPT and DALL-E, showcasing strong capabilities in natural language processing, image generation, and visual recognition. However, these systems still fall short of being considered true AGI, as they have their limitations and imperfections.
