December 6, 2024 – Meta, the technology giant, announced on Thursday a partnership with Lightstorm Vision, a tech enterprise owned by renowned film director James Cameron. This collaboration aims to revolutionize the creation of 3D entertainment content, including live sports, concerts, and TV shows, while providing support for Meta’s Quest platform.
According to Meta, the Quest headset will serve as Lightstorm Vision’s dedicated mixed reality hardware platform. This move underscores Meta’s continued commitment to mixed reality, having already invested billions in augmented reality and other metaverse technologies. In September, Meta launched a more affordable version of its Quest headset, making the technology more accessible. Additionally, the company revealed plans to work with Lightstorm to drive down the costs associated with producing 3D content.
James Cameron expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “Entering into a multi-year comprehensive partnership with Meta will revolutionize all visual media. I am amazed by the transformative potential of Meta’s advanced technology and what it means for content creators globally. I believe we are at a true historical inflection point. This collaboration will ensure that we all have the tools to create, experience, and enjoy new and immersive forms of media.”
Previously, Cameron joined the board of Stability AI on September 24th, indicating his interest in integrating AI into storytelling. He aims to push the boundaries of filmmaking technology, similar to how he led the CGI revolution in the past.
