January 16, 2025 – xAI, a company owned by Elon Musk, has recently launched a web-based version of its Grok AI chatbot, following the release of its iOS app. This move allows users to experience the full range of Grok’s capabilities without the need to visit X.com or even have an X account.
To access the web version, users simply need to provide their birth year and they can immediately begin using it for real-time information gathering, obtaining answers to questions, and even generating images.
Located below the input box, the menu enables users to add attachments and switch between modes such as “Auto,” “Visualize,” “Search,” and “Model-only,” providing them with greater control over Grok’s responses.

Similar to the iOS app, users are not required to have an X account to log in to Grok.com. After clicking the “Log In” button, they can choose to connect their X account or log in via Google or email.
However, it appears that there are some limitations when using the free plan (i.e., not linked to an X Premium account). These restrictions include the generation of 10 images every 2 hours, 3 image analysis credits per day, and 4 image generations per day.
Once logged in, users can activate “Temporary Mode” by clicking on the ghost icon in the top right corner. When this mode is enabled, a message appears below the input box stating: “This chat is temporary and will not appear in your history or be used to train the model. For security reasons, we may safely keep it for up to 30 days.”
Adjacent to the ghost icon, users can find links to their chat history and a simple settings menu. At the bottom of the settings menu, users can customize their appearance preferences, choosing between light, dark, or system default themes.
