June 25, 2024 – Apple has postponed the construction of its major new campus in North Carolina, as reported by Triangle Business Journal. The tech giant had previously announced in 2021 a significant investment of over $1 billion in the state, with plans to establish an engineering and research center in the Research Triangle area of Raleigh and Durham.
Since the initial announcement, progress on the campus construction has been sluggish, and Apple has remained tight-lipped about any updates regarding the work. Recently, the company informed Triangle Business Journal that it has temporarily halted the project and is currently collaborating with North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper and the state’s Department of Commerce to extend the project timeline by four years. Although the reason for the delay has not been disclosed, Apple emphasized its commitment to completing the campus in North Carolina.
Apple has been operating in North Carolina for over two decades, expressing a deep dedication to expanding its team in the area. Over the past three years, the company has added more than 600 members to its Raleigh team and looks forward to developing its new campus in the coming years.
Last year, Apple submitted the development plan for the first phase of construction, but the precise timeline for the project has remained uncertain. The company’s plans for Research Triangle Park include six buildings and a parking lot, totaling 700,000 square feet of office space, 190,000 square feet of ancillary space, and nearly 3,000 parking spaces on a 41-acre site.
With 281 acres of land owned by Apple in the area designated for the campus, multiple construction phases are anticipated. While preparing for the construction of the North Carolina research center, Apple has already leased over 200,000 square feet of office space in Cary, North Carolina.
