March 12, 2025 – In a recent revelation shared with Reuters, a well-informed source has disclosed Mercedes-Benz’s ambitious plan to roll out autonomous vehicles equipped with lidar sensors manufactured by Chinese company Hesai Technology for the global market. This marks a pioneering move by a foreign automaker to incorporate such Chinese-made technology into models sold beyond China’s borders.
Earlier today, Hesai Technology made an announcement regarding a multi-year exclusive partnership with a leading European automaker. Under this collaboration, Hesai will supply high-performance, ultra-long-range lidar for the latter’s next-generation automotive platform, encompassing various models within both its conventional and electric vehicle fleets. While Hesai has refrained from disclosing the identity of its partner and the exact duration of the agreement, insiders have hinted that “this is a long-term partnership spanning beyond 2030 and represents the largest order in the field of overseas automotive lidar installations to date.”
