April 01, 2024 – In a recent interview with CNBC last month, Won-joon Choi, the Executive Vice President of Samsung’s Mobile Business, hinted at a potential upgrade for the company’s virtual assistant, Bixby. The South Korean tech giant is reportedly exploring the integration of Generative AI capabilities, similar to those found in ChatGPT, into its longstanding digital helper.
According to Choi, the emergence of Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLM) has prompted a need to redefine Bixby’s role. “I believe we must redefine Bixby’s role to equip it with generative AI technology and make it even smarter in the future,” he stated.
Despite Samsung’s current focus on enhancing its various applications and services with “Galaxy AI” features, Bixby has yet to receive such an upgrade. However, the company has not divulged any specific details regarding the integration process, leaving it unclear whether Bixby will evolve into a fully-fledged conversational AI chatbot akin to ChatGPT.
Previously, Samsung has indicated that Bixby will coexist with its Galaxy AI functionality on smartphones. At the 2024 CES exhibition, the company mentioned that AI will facilitate collaboration between SmartThings and Bixby, hinting at a potential symbiotic relationship between the two.
As Samsung continues to explore the possibilities of AI integration across its product line, the upcoming enhancements to Bixby mark a significant step forward in the company’s quest to stay at the forefront of technological innovation.
