September 21, 2024 – According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Qualcomm is set to lay off 226 employees in San Diego later this year.
The layoffs, effective during the week of November 12th (November 11th to 17th), were announced under the California WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) Act. The job cuts will impact staff across 16 of Qualcomm’s facilities in San Diego, including its headquarters.
In response, a Qualcomm spokesperson stated, “Our cutting-edge technology and product portfolio enable us to execute a diversified strategy. As part of our regular business operations, we prioritize and adjust our investments, resources, and talent to ensure we can optimally capitalize on the unprecedented range of opportunities ahead of us.”
This statement suggests that Qualcomm’s decision to reduce its workforce is part of a broader business strategy aimed at shifting resources to focus on new ventures.
Meanwhile, on September 18th, the second-highest court in Europe confirmed an EU antitrust fine against Qualcomm, slightly reducing it from the initial 242 million euros to 238.7 million euros.
