Intel to Lay Off Hundreds at Polish R&D Center

October 30, 2024 – According to a report by the Warsaw Business Journal on October 29, citing documents submitted by Intel to the local labor office, the technology giant is planning to lay off hundreds of employees at its research and development center in Gdansk, Poland.

In response to the report, an Intel spokesperson in Poland stated, “As part of the broad cost-saving plan announced in August, we are making difficult but necessary decisions regarding job reductions.” However, the spokesperson did not specify the exact number of layoffs.

“These are the hardest decisions we have faced. The goal of these changes is to create a simpler, more adaptable, and optimized organization, which is part of Intel’s long-term sustainable development strategy,” the spokesperson added. Currently, Intel employs about 2,500 staff and 1,500 subcontractors at its Gdansk research and development campus.

In August of this year, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger announced a “major cost-cutting initiative” in a memo to employees. The plan aims to save $10 billion in costs by 2025, including the reduction of approximately 15,000 jobs, which represents about 15% of the company’s total workforce. Gelsinger noted that most of these measures are expected to be completed by the end of this year.

At present, management teams from various departments within Intel have submitted lists of suggested layoffs to the company’s headquarters. Gelsinger pointed out that through voluntary early retirement and separation programs, the company has already achieved more than half of its layoff target for this year. Additionally, he mentioned that Intel is advancing a plan to reduce or exit approximately two-thirds of its global real estate assets by the end of the year.
