March 7, 2025 – OpenAI announced yesterday, via a tweet on the X platform, the upgrade of its macOS ChatGPT application, enhancing its integration with development environments like Xcode and VS Code. The updated app now allows developers to directly edit code within these Integrated Development Environments (IDEs), significantly simplifying the coding process.
With the revamped ChatGPT macOS app, users can engage with the AI directly within Xcode and other IDEs through the new “Collaborate with Applications” feature. This capability enables developers to interact with ChatGPT and write code more efficiently, potentially rivaling Apple’s built-in Swift Assist and GitHub Copilot.

Furthermore, the update introduces an “Auto-Apply” mode, eliminating the need for users to provide additional authorization. This mode supports ChatGPT’s direct code editing, further streamlining the development workflow.
Alexander Embiricos, a member of the OpenAI team, demonstrated the new functionality in a video posted on social media, showcasing how it enhances the developer’s user experience. Currently, the update is available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers. Enterprise, Education, and free users will gain access to the update next week. Windows users are also expected to “soon” benefit from this new feature.
Looking ahead, OpenAI plans to extend this integration beyond IDEs to more Mac applications, gradually rolling it out to all Mac desktop users, including free users. This expansion hints at ChatGPT’s potential evolution into a more comprehensive system desktop assistant.
Meanwhile, as the industry awaits a smarter Siri AI from Apple to assist developers with their Xcode projects, reports suggest that a conversational Siri may only arrive in 2027. Until then, ChatGPT’s enhanced integration with macOS could offer a compelling alternative for developers seeking AI-assisted coding solutions.
