OpenAI Takes Action: Blocking API Access in Unsupported Regions

June 25, 2024 – Developers of APIs have taken to social media today to express concern over a “warning letter” received from OpenAI. The letter indicates that the company will be implementing additional measures to halt API usage in unsupported regions.

According to the letter, “Based on data, your organization has API traffic originating from areas currently not supported by OpenAI. Effective July 9th, we will be taking extra steps to cease API usage from countries and regions not included in OpenAI’s supported list.” Organizations affected by this change will need to access OpenAI’s services from within its supported countries or regions if they wish to continue using them.

It’s worth noting that OpenAI’s API is currently available in 161 countries and regions, excluding mainland China and Hong Kong. In a public article published on February 14th of this year, titled “Preventing the Malicious Use of Artificial Intelligence by State-Sponsored Threat Actors,” OpenAI mentioned blocking and restricting access for certain users, including those from China, North Korea, Iran, and Russia.
