September 21, 2024 – According to a blog post published by tech media outlet The Decoder on September 20th, OpenAI is on the verge of closing a massive funding round worth between 5billionand7 billion, potentially pushing the company’s valuation towards $150 billion.
Reports indicate that OpenAI has set a minimum investment threshold of $250 million for this funding round.
The financing is being led by Thrive Capital, which has committed to investing $1 billion. Other participants include:
Microsoft, NVIDIA, and Apple, who are in discussions to invest a combined total of 2billionto3 billion.
Tiger Global Management and Abu Dhabi’s artificial intelligence investment fund, MGX, have also joined the negotiations, seeking to acquire a stake in the company.
Microsoft, already the largest investor in OpenAI with approximately $13 billion, has further deepened its ties. Apple, which is integrating ChatGPT into its new AI feature suite called Apple Intelligence, had initially planned to join Microsoft as a board observer at OpenAI. However, this plan was scrapped in July.
Currently, investors such as Microsoft have profit-sharing agreements rather than traditional equity stakes in the company.
