Japan’s Affluent Embrace AI Pets as Their New Companions

December 29, 2024 – The companion robot LOVOT, created by the Japanese robotics company Groove X, is emerging as the new “pet” of wealthy individuals in Japan.

According to the founder of LOVOT, the robot’s goal is to become a real-life Doraemon without the four-dimensional pocket. Unlike the famous cartoon character, LOVOT is not capable of providing secret weapons or performing extraordinary tasks. Instead, it offers companionship and friendship to its owners.

In a country where loneliness is widespread, the team behind LOVOT sought to develop a “warm technology” that would not invoke fear or anxiety. To achieve this, LOVOT was purposely designed to be useless in terms of practical functionality, focusing instead on fostering a sense of camaraderie and requiring human care.

The robot stands at approximately 43 centimeters tall, 28 centimeters wide, and weighs around 4 kilograms, making it easy to cuddle like a small baby or a cat. With its adorable size and friendly demeanor, LOVOT is quickly becoming a beloved companion for those seeking a unique and affectionate robotic pet.
