Mayor Lurie Urges Tech CEOs: How Can We Keep You in San Francisco?

April 7, 2025 – In a recent event, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, as reported by TechCrunch, disclosed his proactive approach to retaining and attracting tech companies to the city. During a local gathering on the 3rd, Lurie mentioned he personally reaches out to CEOs of tech firms and entrepreneurs, asking them directly, “What can we do to keep you here?” or “What changes would encourage you to return to San Francisco?”

The mayor emphasized the importance of improving the city’s aesthetics and public safety, which he believes are key factors driving businesses away. He also stressed the need to streamline the process of establishing new businesses or housing in the city. “Our goal is to make it easier for entrepreneurs to set up shop, grow roots, and open restaurants, bars, or companies without unnecessary hurdles,” he stated.

Lurie revealed that he has already collaborated with several leading AI companies, encouraging them to establish new offices and host more conferences in San Francisco. For instance, he successfully persuaded Databricks to host its AI conference in the city until 2030 and attended the opening of OpenAI’s new office.

The mayor also expressed his hope that these companies will contribute more to the city’s arts and cultural scene. He specifically called on OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to be more transparent about the company’s investments in these areas.

Additionally, Lurie initiated the formation of the “San Francisco Partnership,” which includes influential figures such as Altman, Lauren Powell Jobs (the widow of Steve Jobs and owner of The Atlantic), and former Apple Chief Designer Jony Ive. The partnership aims to involve businesses directly in urban governance.

Looking ahead, Lurie is optimistic about the future of autonomous vehicles and is in discussions with companies to expand their presence in San Francisco. He also indicated that the city is considering upgrading its infrastructure to better support autonomous driving technologies.
