J.D. Power Study Reveals Tesla’s Dip in Consumer Satisfaction, While Traditional Carmakers Gain Ground

July 29, 2024 – According to the latest J.D. Power 2024 U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) study, consumer satisfaction with Tesla has declined, while brands like Rivian, Porsche, and Jaguar have emerged at the forefront of the rankings.

The study, based on surveys of 99,144 owners of 2024 model-year vehicles, evaluated consumer satisfaction 90 days after vehicle delivery. The results indicate that traditional automakers have made gains in consumer satisfaction.

Tesla’s overall score dropped from 878 last year to 870 this year, whereas brands like Porsche, BMW, Dodge, and Ram saw their scores increase.

Frank Hanley, Senior Director of Automotive Benchmarking at J.D. Power, stated, “Traditional automakers have been listening to consumers. They are introducing models that better meet consumer needs, including improvements in interior storage space, the use of higher-quality materials, and ensuring features are easy to use. In the case of electric vehicles, recent models from traditional automakers have surpassed the long-leading Tesla in terms of consumer emotional attachment and excitement.”

It’s important to note that the survey was based on vehicle data registered between July 2023 and May 2024. Although Rivian and Tesla had high overall scores, they did not receive any awards as they did not meet the criteria for the study awards. JD Power stated in the award criteria, “In any given award segment, there must be at least three models accounting for 80% of the market sales, or four models accounting for 67% of the market sales, to issue the award. No awards were given in the small car, midsize premium car, large car, large premium car, compact sporty car, and midsize sporty car segments as these criteria were not met.”

Among all evaluation categories, the infotainment system scored the lowest, with an average of 823 points, although it still represents a 5-point improvement from last year. Vehicles using Android Auto or Apple CarPlay generally ranked higher, with average scores of 832 and 840, respectively.

J.D. Power also pointed out that Tesla, Rivian, and Polestar ranked lower in the 2024 Initial Quality Study released earlier this year, as many electric vehicles require more repairs. Additionally, Tesla’s mobile app was rated as the best in the industry, and its website ranked second only to Mercedes-Benz.
