April 30, 2026 – BYD has recently achieved a remarkable milestone in the Australian automotive market by delivering its 100,000th vehicle. This feat was accomplished in less than three and a half years since the brand’s debut in Australia in November 2022, setting a new record for the fastest growth of a Chinese automotive brand in the country.
During a special ceremony in Brisbane, Liu Xueliang, General Manager of BYD’s Asia-Pacific region, personally handed over the keys to a blue Shark 6 Premium plug-in hybrid pickup truck to its new owner. The Shark 6 Premium has emerged as one of the best-selling pickup trucks and plug-in hybrid models in the Australian market.

BYD’s growth trajectory in Australia has been nothing short of impressive. In 2025, the company sold a total of 52,415 vehicles, representing a staggering 156.2% year-on-year increase. This performance propelled BYD to the eighth position on the Australian brand sales chart for the first time. Leveraging the global surge in oil prices, BYD’s sales soared even further in March 2026, climbing to the third spot in monthly sales rankings—a historic high for a Chinese brand in Australia.
Two models have been instrumental in driving BYD’s sales success in Australia. The Shark 6 plug-in hybrid pickup truck, designed to cater to Australians’ preference for pickup trucks, has become the most popular choice among private buyers in both the pickup and plug-in hybrid segments.
The other key contributor is the Sealion 7 all-electric SUV. In December of the previous year, it claimed the title of Australia’s best-selling electric vehicle with 2,546 units sold, ranking fourth overall in the market.
Additionally, the BYD Atto 3, the brand’s first model to enter the Australian market, laid a solid foundation for BYD’s presence in the country. It has since established itself as one of the most popular electric vehicles in Australia.
