OpenAI’s Altman Says Gemini 3 Impact Exaggerated, “Red Alert” Lifting in Jan

December 12, 2025 – On Thursday local time, OpenAI unveiled its latest artificial intelligence mega – model, GPT – 5.2, in a bid to counter the rising challenge posed by Google’s Gemini 3.

Faced with the looming threat from Gemini 3, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman sounded the “red alert” within the company, rallying resources to enhance ChatGPT. However, Altman downplayed the severity of the impact from Google’s new model.

In an interview with CNBC on Thursday, Altman stated that the influence of Google’s released Gemini 3 model on OpenAI’s business performance metrics was not as significant as initially feared.

He also revealed that OpenAI anticipated ending the “red alert” status in January next year. “I believe that when there’s a competitive threat, you want to focus on it and respond swiftly,” Altman remarked.

OpenAI further announced that GPT – 5.2 would come in three versions: Instant, Thinker, and Pro. The Instant version is designed to be faster in text generation and information retrieval. The Thinker version excels at structured tasks such as coding and planning. And the Pro version offers the most precise solutions for complex problems.
