November 29, 2025 – According to a report from Japan’s Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun, KIOXIA and SanDisk are exploring the possibility of jointly constructing a NAND wafer fabrication plant in the United States, a move that is anticipated to receive backing from both the Japanese and American governments.

Currently, the NAND wafer fabs operated by the KIOXIA – SanDisk partnership are situated in Yokkaichi and Kitakami in Japan. On a global scale, the production capacity of NAND flash memory is predominantly concentrated in East Asia. Notably, major manufacturers like Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron have no plans to involve NAND operations in their proposed construction projects in the US.
Previous reports have indicated that SanDisk had once contemplated building a large – scale wafer fab in Michigan, the US. Moreover, in recent times, there have been rumors suggesting that SanDisk is considering utilizing the facilities of Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation for expansion. This indicates that within the KIOXIA – SanDisk alliance, SanDisk, at least, has a strong desire to increase its production capacity.
