Former Intel CEO Gelsinger: Quantum Computing to Go Mainstream in 2 Years, Disrupt AI & Replace GPUs by 2030

November 29, 2025 – In an interview with the Financial Times, Pat Gelsinger, the former CEO of Intel, made some bold and thought – provoking predictions about the future of computing technology.

Gelsinger, who now works at the venture capital firm Playground Global, has been closely following the cutting – edge developments in quantum computing. He believes that quantum computing, along with classical computing and AI computing, will form the “Holy Trinity” of the future computing landscape.

One of his most striking predictions is that quantum computing will become widespread in just two years. This stands in stark contrast to the view of Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia. Huang previously estimated that it would take another two decades for quantum computing to go mainstream. Gelsinger emphasized that regardless of who is right, the coming decade promises to be the most exciting one in the tech world.

Gelsinger also made a daring claim about the fate of GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) chips, which currently dominate the market. He predicts that these chips will start to be replaced by the end of this decade, before 2030. He argues that once “qubits” (the basic units of quantum information) make their official debut, the existing architectures of classical and AI computing will quickly become outdated.

In addition to his technological forecasts, Gelsinger offered some sharp insights into the relationships among current tech giants. He compared the partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI to the relationship between Bill Gates and IBM in the 1990s. According to Gelsinger, OpenAI acts more like a distribution partner for Microsoft’s AI models, while Microsoft provides crucial computing power support behind the scenes. This view implies that in Gelsinger’s eyes, the giants that control the underlying computing power and infrastructure still hold the real dominance.
