August 26, 2024 – Despite being merely a streaming device, the impressive market performance of PlayStation Portal has prompted Sony to take a fresh look at the handheld gaming console segment. According to industry insider Tom Henderson, Sony is closely monitoring the handheld gaming market.
This further corroborates previous rumors leaked by Moore’s Law is Dead, suggesting that Sony is developing a successor to the PS Vita equipped with a custom AMD chip. While there is no confirmed release date for this device yet, Sony might unveil it after Microsoft launches its Xbox handheld gaming console in 2026. By that time, AMD’s Zen 6 and RDNA 5 architectures are expected to be mature, potentially appearing in numerous handheld gaming consoles from various manufacturers including ASUS and MSI.
Given the success of PlayStation Portal, it is reasonable to speculate that Sony might introduce another version, possibly featuring a high-refresh-rate OLED screen, before considering the development of a handheld console capable of running games locally.
