January 10, 2024 – Google, at the CES 2024 exposition, announced its plans to introduce a new feature for the Pixel Tablet known as “Tap to Cast.” This innovation aims to transform the Pixel Tablet into a central hub for managing all smart home and media needs.
The upcoming “Tap to Cast” functionality will enable users to seamlessly switch audio from their compatible Pixel smartphones to the Pixel Tablet. This capability will be particularly useful for streaming services like Spotify and YouTube Music.
According to Google, “Tap to Cast” relies on a combination of technologies, including Ultra-Wideband (UWB), Bluetooth Low Energy, and Wi-Fi. The feature will be compatible with Pixel 6 Pro and subsequent models, offering a convenient and effortless way to enjoy audio on a larger screen.
This new feature bears similarities to Apple’s “Handoff” function, which allows iPhone users to transfer music to HomePod speakers. Now, Pixel users can enjoy a comparable experience with “Tap to Cast,” which is expected to roll out later this year and may eventually expand to Nest smart displays.
In addition to “Tap to Cast,” Google also announced updates to Chromecast. The company revealed that the 2024 lineup of LG televisions will have Chromecast built-in, enabling users to cast content from their apps directly to a bigger screen.
Furthermore, Google has collaborated with TikTok to develop a casting feature for the viral video app. This integration will allow users to share their favorite pet clips or any other engaging content from their phones to the living room television, enhancing the overall viewing experience.
Lastly, Google is also optimizing Fast Pair for televisions. Fast Pair, a feature that facilitates quick Bluetooth pairing by detecting nearby devices, will be available on more Google TVs later in 2024. This update will further streamline the connectivity process for users.
