July 17, 2024 – Google has offered a staggering economic incentive of 470 million euros to persuade the Cloud Infrastructure Services Providers in Europe (CISPE) to reject a settlement with Microsoft and instead, urge the European Union (EU) to proceed with an investigation into Microsoft’s cloud computing division.
According to reports in July, CISPE had previously lodged a complaint with the European Commission, alleging that Microsoft’s cloud business practices were unfair, undermining healthy competition in the market.
In an effort to avert the investigation, Microsoft reached a 20 million euro settlement with CISPE, which also included an agreement to allow CISPE members to run Microsoft software.
Bloomberg reported that Google is willing to invest a massive 470 million euros to undermine the settlement between CISPE and Microsoft, hoping to persuade CISPE to continue pursuing antitrust litigation against Microsoft.
However, the latest news indicates that CISPE has declined Google’s offer, preferring direct negotiations with Microsoft over prolonged legal battles.
