December 8, 2024 – According to a report by Nikkei on the 6th, research firm MarkLines has compiled statistics on pure electric vehicle sales. The study focused on over 2.5 million pure electric vehicles sold in 55 countries from July to September 2024.
Tesla emerged as the leader, selling 430,000 vehicles during the quarter, representing a 2% year-on-year increase. Despite a decline in Tesla’s sales in Europe and America, the company experienced a rebound in sales in China. BYD followed closely in second place, with sales of 420,000 vehicles, marking a 9% growth compared to the previous year. Geely secured the third spot, selling 200,000 electric cars during the quarter.
General Motors ranked fourth, selling 180,000 vehicles in the quarter, a robust 27% increase year-on-year. Its Chinese joint venture, SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile, contributed significantly to sales. However, General Motors has postponed production at a planned battery factory in the Midwest of the United States, forcing the company to adjust its strategy.
Although Nikkei did not elaborate on the performances of other top 10 automakers, it highlighted the “awkward situation” faced by Japanese companies, which were all ranked outside the top 20.
Among Japanese firms, Nissan Motor, which leads in pure electric vehicle sales in Japan, sold 34,000 units, up 2%, but its ranking slipped four places to 22nd. Sales of its two pure electric models, “Sakura” and “LEAF”, have stagnated in the domestic market.
Toyota sold 33,000 vehicles, placing it at 23rd with a 36% increase, while Honda ranked 24th with 20,000 units sold. According to the report, Japanese firms struggle to offer competitive pure electric vehicles in China and face difficulties selling their products in North America without offering significant sales incentives.
Separately, Xiaomi Group’s third-quarter financial report revealed that its SU7 series delivered 39,790 new cars during the quarter. As of September 30, 2024, Xiaomi Automobiles had already delivered 67,157 new vehicles.
