FAA Final Rules Pave the Way for “Future Aerial Rideshares”

October 23, 2024 – The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has unveiled the long-awaited final regulations for electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft, heralding a new era in “aviation of the future.”

The FAA asserts that these aircraft represent the first entirely new aircraft category since the advent of helicopters in 1940. These innovative crafts are poised to revolutionize various services, encompassing air taxis, cargo deliveries, and rescue operations. The final rules issued today encompass pilot training guidelines along with operational requirements regarding minimum safe altitudes and visibility standards.

Numerous startups, including Joby Aviation, Archer, and Wisk, have ambitious plans to launch commercial air taxi services utilizing these novel aircraft in the coming years. Currently, no eVTOL aircraft are in commercial operation within the United States.
