October 23, 2024 – In an exclusive interview with The Wall Street Journal, Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President and Head of Software, delved into the company’s approach to AI and how it distinguishes itself from its competitors. Federighi highlighted examples where Siri, Apple’s virtual assistant, can perform tasks such as opening garage doors or sending texts, capabilities that ChatGPT, for instance, cannot match.
According to Federighi, Siri is set to evolve continuously over time, but Apple is not aiming to create a “conscious companion.” This stance contrasts sharply with companies like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google, which seem to hint at the imminent realization of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
Apple’s focus, Federighi emphasized, lies on providing users with practical tools like useful text summaries or the ability to use Clean Up to remove unwanted elements from photos. In contrast, other firms delight in generating entire articles or transforming memories into fiction, areas that Apple appears less interested in pursuing.
Addressing the delay in launching Apple Intelligence features, Federighi explained that AI is a “monumental task,” and the company prefers to deliver perfection rather than hastily introduce a “chaotic” product.
