November 16, 2024 – Gaming media outlet IGN reported today that Coca-Cola has unveiled its first fully AI-generated video advertisement, a 16-second clip inspired by the iconic “Holidays Are Coming” ad from 1995. However, the new ad has sparked significant controversy.
The original “Holidays Are Coming” commercial, released by Coca-Cola in 1995, holds a special place in the hearts of many Americans as a cherished holiday memory.
Coca-Cola’s latest 16-second advertisement pays homage to this classic, featuring similar elements such as the familiar tune and the bright, oversized truck. Notably, this marks the company’s first advertisement entirely created by artificial intelligence.
Unfortunately, the advertisement has not garnered much praise. Social media platforms are abuzz with negative feedback, as many viewers have described the clip as “trash,” “awkward,” and even “creepy.”
Despite the backlash, the production team behind the advertisement defends the use of AI, citing efficiency as a key benefit. According to founder Jason Zada, advertisements produced with AI technology are created five times faster than traditional methods, offering a significant advantage in production time.
IGN posits that while Coca-Cola’s attempt to rejuvenate its advertising with AI technology is admirable, the negative reception could potentially drive consumers to its rival Pepsi.
