November 18, 2024 – In today’s Power On live communication, Mark Gurman from Bloomberg claimed that Apple is currently evaluating the possibility of “manufacturing its own brand of television.” Rumors of an “Apple-branded television” had surfaced around 2009-2010, but no such product was ultimately released.
The only television-like product Apple has ever produced was the Macintosh TV, released in 1993. This device featured a 14-inch Sony Trinitron CRT screen and could be used as both a cable television (in display mode) and a computer.
In computer mode, the Macintosh TV was essentially a modified version of the entry-level Macintosh Performa 520. It was equipped with a 32 MHz Motorola 68030 central processing unit, came with 5MB of RAM and a 160MB hard drive, and ran on the Mac OS 7.6.1 system.
However, due to issues with its positioning and pricing, the product was a significant failure. It was priced at 2,097atlaunch,whichisequivalentto4,423 today. According to Robert Standefer’s “Macintosh Switcher’s Guide,” only 10,000 units of this product were manufactured. Nowadays, this machine is highly sought after by Apple fans and collectors.
