November 15, 2024 – Apple has emerged as the top-ranked company in the 2024 Retailer Report Card released by Toxic-Free Future, scoring an impressive 84% and earning the sole “A” grade, according to a report published by tech media outlet AppleInsider.
The Retailer Report Card is a tool that evaluates and scores the performance of major U.S. and Canadian retailers in their use of safer chemicals. Its primary objective is to assess the efforts of these retailers in reducing the utilization of harmful chemical substances.
Among the North American retailers evaluated in the report, Apple stood out with its 84% score, claiming the top spot and reinforcing its leadership position in environmental protection as the only company to receive an “A” rating.
The report highlighted that beauty retailer Sephora followed closely with a score of 69%, while Walmart, Sam’s Club, and Target trailed behind with a 65% rating.
Apple’s commitment to safer chemicals was commended in the report, noting the company’s implementation of a comprehensive material disclosure program that shares material ingredient data with manufacturers, showcasing its transparency efforts.
Furthermore, Apple has set a goal to eliminate plastic from its packaging by 2025, aligning its definition of safer alternatives with Washington state standards. This reflects the company’s environmentally conscious approach to product design and development.
Additionally, the report mentioned Apple’s provision of seed funding for the Safe Chemicals Investment Fund and its sponsorship of ChemForward’s solvent and flame retardant database for chemical hazard assessment. These initiatives demonstrate Apple’s proactive stance in advancing chemical safety.
