Meta Faces €798 Million Penalty from EU for Anticompetitive Practices

November 15, 2024 – The European Commission has imposed a fine of €798 million on Meta today, citing the company’s violation of EU antitrust rules. According to the Commission, Meta unlawfully tied its online classified ads service, Facebook Marketplace, to its social media platform, Facebook, and imposed unfair trading conditions on other online classified ads service providers.

The Commission has ordered Meta to effectively cease these practices and refrain from repeating the infringements or adopting measures with equivalent objectives or effects in the future.

In response to the decision, Meta has stated in a declaration that it intends to appeal the ruling, arguing that the EU has failed to provide evidence of harm caused to competitors or consumers.
