**September 25, 2023 -** In a groundbreaking development, Anthropic, a prominent player in the AI field, announced today that it has secured a substantial investment of up to $4 billion from tech giant Amazon. This partnership aims to foster the joint development of reliable and high-performance foundational AI models while embarking on a broader collaborative journey.
Under this arrangement, Amazon employees and cloud computing clients will gain early access to Anthropic’s cutting-edge technology, seamlessly integrating it into their own operations. Anthropic commits to heavily rely on Amazon’s cloud services to train its forthcoming AI behemoths, leveraging a substantial amount of proprietary chips purchased from Amazon.
Utilizing Amazon Web Services’ high-performance and cost-effective learning accelerators, Anthropic will train and deploy its next-generation foundational models on AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips. For Amazon, this deal represents the latest stride in harnessing the potential of generative AI.
Catering to the surging demand among Amazon Web Services users for Anthropic’s large language model, Claude, Anthropic will expand its support for AWS Bedrock. This expansion will encompass secure model customization and fine-tuning services, empowering enterprises to optimize Claude’s performance while mitigating the risk of undesirable outcomes through their domain expertise.
In terms of specifics, Amazon will make an initial investment of $1.25 billion to acquire a minority stake in Anthropic, with both companies having the option to increase the total investment to $4 billion in the future.
Earlier this year, Anthropic had already secured financing valuing the company at nearly $5 billion, and in the previous year, Google invested $300 million in the company.
