December 30, 2024 – The application of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) technology in the smartphone industry has emerged as a trending topic. According to a recent survey conducted by Counterpoint Research across seven countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Poland, and Japan, the awareness and adoption of Gen AI among consumers vary significantly.
The survey, which polled over 25,000 respondents, revealed that only 32% of them were familiar with Gen AI. The highest level of awareness was observed in the United States, where 72% of respondents expressed knowledge about the technology. Conversely, Japan had the lowest awareness, with only 7% of respondents claiming to understand Gen AI.
Notably, the research highlighted that over 70% of Gen AI users access the technology through their smartphones, indicating the crucial role played by mobile phones in driving the widespread adoption of Gen AI. Among these users, the Z generation accounted for the highest proportion.
Furthermore, almost 60% of survey participants expressed their intention to purchase a Gen AI-enabled smartphone in the coming year. Consumers from the United States demonstrated the strongest willingness to buy, followed by those from Germany and France.
When it comes to specific applications, users showed a preference for writing assistance, image generation, and voice assistant features. However, despite the strong interest in Gen AI phones, only 19% of respondents were willing to pay extra for this technology.
This finding suggests that smartphone manufacturers may need to adopt a low-cost strategy and explore alternative profit models, such as monetizing applications or providing Large Language Model (LLM) services to developers, to capitalize on the growing demand for Gen AI while addressing consumers’ price sensitivities.
