May 20, 2026 – Waymo’s self-driving taxis have long been praised for their smooth urban navigation, but a bizarre glitch in Atlanta is turning the robotaxis into the neighborhood’s most confused commuters.
Residents in the upscale Buckhead district have grown increasingly frustrated after dozens of Waymo vehicles began getting trapped in local cul-de-sacs — and not in the way you’d expect. Rather than stopping at the end of the road like any sensible driver, the empty autonomous cars keep rolling in, executing a U-turn, and rolling right back out, only to be replaced by the next one in line.
The scale of the problem is staggering. One local resident reported counting 13 Waymo units in a single 10-minute window, while another documented roughly 50 driverless cars cycling through the same dead-end street between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. on a recent morning — all completely empty.
Footage captured by neighbors shows an almost comical convoy of white robotaxis lining up one after another, driving to the end of the cul-de-sac, flipping around, and heading back the way they came. The pattern repeated across multiple dead-end streets in the area.
Fed up with the parade of autonomous confusion, residents took matters into their own hands by placing a bright neon-green sign featuring a children’s crossing symbol at one of the affected intersections. The improvised roadblock worked — too well. At least eight Waymo vehicles were left stranded at the sign, endlessly attempting to reverse and reorient themselves with nowhere to go.
Waymo has acknowledged the navigation anomalies affecting its fleet in Atlanta, confirming it is working on a fix. However, the company declined to disclose what exactly is causing the routing errors. In a statement, Waymo emphasized that its service handles more than 500,000 rides per week and reaffirmed its commitment to safety and a positive experience for both riders and the communities it serves.
For now, Buckhead residents can only hope the robotaxis figure out the concept of a dead end before the neighborhood runs out of patience.
