Rivian Halts Production of Amazon Delivery Vans Due to Component Shortage

August 17, 2024 – According to a report by electrek, Rivian, the emerging American automobile manufacturer, has halted the production of its electric delivery vehicles (EDVs) at its Illinois plant due to a shortage of components. A company spokesperson confirmed this news on Friday.

Rivian produces EDVs for its largest investor, Amazon, which ordered 100,000 such vehicles in 2019, with a delivery deadline of 2030. Rivian’s delivery vehicles, which hit the market in July 2022, have already populated American streets with over 13,500 units in just two years.

Interestingly, Rivian announced last November that it would no longer exclusively sell its delivery vans to Amazon. The company’s custom-designed commercial vans are now available for purchase by other companies as well. This move, according to Rivian, provides more opportunities for companies worldwide to electrify their delivery fleets with state-of-the-art vehicles, thereby aiding in further reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

Rivian’s financial report for the second quarter of 2024 reveals some interesting numbers. The company produced a total of 9,612 vehicles and delivered 13,790 vehicles during this period, showing a slight increase compared to the previous quarter. The report also forecasts an increase in production for the latter half of the year.

Additionally, Rivian reported a total revenue of 1.158billionforthequarter,with17 million coming from carbon credit sales. However, the company also incurred a net loss of $1.457 billion, marking a 21.92% increase compared to the previous year.
