China’s First Purpose-Built Robotaxi Rolls Off the Line as CaoCao and Geely Begin Mass-Production Validation

October 20, 2026 – CaoCao Mobility and Geely have rolled out the first engineering prototype of what they describe as China’s first purpose-built Robotaxi, moving the program into a real-vehicle verification phase ahead of mass production.

The vehicle, named Eva Cab, was first shown as a prototype at the Beijing Auto Show in April. The newly completed engineering sample is intended to validate production-level hardware, software and operations plans rather than serve as a final customer vehicle.

Unlike many current Robotaxis that are modified from passenger cars, Eva Cab has been developed from the ground up for driverless ride-hailing. Its architecture, cabin layout, safety systems and maintenance model are all designed around unmanned commercial operation.

On the hardware side, the car uses Geely’s EEA 4.0 electronic and electrical architecture and a high-performance computing platform built around Nvidia’s SuperChip and Thor U together with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8797 chip. Combined compute exceeds 3,000 TOPS, providing headroom for L4 autonomous driving workloads.

Perception is handled by a 2,160-line digital LiDAR, which the companies say can generate 25.92 million points per second and detect objects up to 600 meters away. The vehicle will run Geely’s G-ASD L4 autonomous driving software, which is designed for driverless pickup and drop-off in scenarios such as airport transfers, hotel shuttles and business travel.

CaoCao Mobility’s customized version of Eva Cab is scheduled to enter mass production in 2027. The company has previously outlined plans to deploy tens of thousands of units by 2030, with initial operations expected across selected Chinese cities and overseas markets including Hong Kong and Abu Dhabi.

Geely has also indicated that the Robotaxi will support battery swapping, aligning it with CaoCao’s existing fleet strategy and helping reduce vehicle downtime during commercial operation.

The milestone puts CaoCao and Geely among the more advanced Chinese players moving Robotaxi development from prototype demonstrations toward production-ready validation. The next key test will be whether the engineering prototype can meet durability, safety and cost targets required for large-scale fleet deployment.
