July 02, 2024 – According to a report by ETNews, a Korean media outlet, both Apple and Google are set to adopt Samsung’s cutting-edge “M14” OLED display panels in their flagship devices launching later this year. The report states that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be the first to feature this advanced technology, while Google’s upcoming Pixel 9 series will also sport these state-of-the-art displays.
Although Samsung is supplying OLED panels for all four models of the iPhone 16, not every version will utilize the latest technology. Previous reports indicated that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max would be equipped with higher-quality LTPO screens. The latest update clarifies that the OLED panels for these two flagship models will be based on M14 technology. Here, “M” denotes the material series used in Samsung’s OLED displays, and the numeral represents the material grade. A higher number indicates superior performance in terms of overall brightness and lifespan of the display panel.

Furthermore, the report mentions that Google will employ the same M14 panels across its entire Pixel 9 series, including the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL. As for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, Apple might stick to the previous generation M12 panels, possibly as a cost-saving measure.
Interestingly, the launch event for Google’s Pixel 9 series could precede Apple’s iPhone 16 series release, giving potential buyers and reviewers an opportunity to experience the M14 display technology ahead of Apple’s flagship devices.
