Zuckerberg Foresees AI Coding Abilities Rivaling Mid-Level Engineers in 2023

January 13, 2025 – Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Meta, stated on the 11th that the field of software engineering is poised for a significant transformation by 2025. He predicts that AI systems will advance to a level where their programming skills rival those of intermediate-level engineers. Zuckerberg believes that Meta and other leading technology companies will soon possess artificial intelligence systems capable of efficiently writing production code.

According to NextBigWhat, Zuckerberg said, “I think by around 2025, Meta and other companies invested in this technology will have an AI that can effectively perform the role of a ‘medium-level engineer’ in the company, handling code writing tasks.”

Last December, Meta announced a $10 billion investment to build the company’s largest AI data center in Louisiana, USA. This center will specifically handle the vast amounts of data needed to support digital infrastructure, including workloads related to artificial intelligence.

A prediction made by research firm Gartner in October of last year suggests that by 2027, generative AI will create new job roles in software engineering and operations. Additionally, 80% of engineers will need to upgrade their skills. Philip Walsh, a senior principal analyst at Gartner, commented, “Bold predictions about AI’s potential have sparked speculation that AI could reduce the need for human engineers, or even replace them entirely. However, while AI will redefine the role of software engineers, human expertise and creativity remain key to developing complex, innovative software.”
