January 09, 2024 – In a recent announcement at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024, Volkswagen revealed its plan to integrate ChatGPT artificial intelligence technology into its existing IDA voice assistant. This move comes after Mercedes-Benz declared a similar integration last June, making Volkswagen the latest automaker to jump on the bandwagon.
According to Volkswagen, ChatGPT will be incorporated into specific models equipped with the latest generation of infotainment systems, namely the ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, as well as the new Volkswagen Tiguan, Passat, and Golf.
Currently, the carmaker’s in-vehicle assistant can already perform tasks such as controlling the infotainment system and navigation. By adding ChatGPT to the mix, Volkswagen aims to enhance the interactive experience by allowing for more intuitive language-based interactions. The company specifically highlighted features like “rich dialogue, problem-solving, intuitive language interaction, and receiving vehicle-specific information.”
Volkswagen’s official announcement stated that the ChatGPT integration is slated for rollout in the second quarter of 2024. However, the company hinted that the new functionality is only “being considered” for the U.S. market at this time. This potential limitation might suggest that the widespread implementation of this cutting-edge technology could still face some regional restrictions or challenges.
