August 21, 2024 – According to a report by The Guardian, Victor Miller, a mayoral candidate in Cheyenne, Wyoming, USA, intends to utilize an AI-driven robot named Vic (Virtual Integrated Citizen) to oversee the local government if elected. Vic, powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT, is touted as capable of handling vast amounts of data and rendering impartial decisions.
Miller, who serves as a librarian, has publicly expressed his fascination with artificial intelligence and its potential applications in governance. However, his ambitious plan to integrate AI into the mayor’s office has faced opposition. Despite this, Miller was recently spotted at a library meeting standing behind a podium labeled “AI for Mayor,” indicating his firm commitment to his vision. Following his speech, he demonstrated Vic’s capabilities by allowing the chatbot to answer audience questions via his Mac mini and iPad.
Describing his approach as a “hybrid method,” Miller also pledged to donate half of his salary to a non-profit organization if elected, while using the other half to enhance Vic’s functionality and user experience.
This unconventional campaign strategy prompted Wyoming Secretary of State Chuck Gray to investigate Miller’s candidacy, ensuring that a robot does not appear on the ballot. “Wyoming law clearly states that AI robots cannot run for public office,” Gray clarified.
In response, OpenAI shut down Miller’s account, effectively disabling the Vic robot. The company explained that using its AI products for campaigning violates its policies. Reports indicate that Miller has created a new account and developed another customized robot.
Meanwhile, the Lami County Clerk has allowed Victor Miller to continue his mayoral bid, but with a strict stipulation: only his name can appear on the ballot. Miller has made it clear that if elected, his customized robot will be responsible for all decision-making.
