January 7, 2025 – Following its agreement to a $95 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit regarding Siri’s “eavesdropping” allegations, Apple released a statement emphasizing that the collected Siri data has never been utilized for advertising purposes or sold to third-party companies.
In its official declaration, Apple stated:
Since Siri’s inception, one of its core design principles has been the rigorous protection of user privacy. Siri data from users has never been employed to construct marketing profiles, nor has it been sold to anyone for any purpose.
Apple’s agreement to settle this case was motivated by a desire to avoid protracted litigation, thereby enabling the company to move beyond concerns regarding third-party assessments that were addressed in 2019. Siri data is utilized solely for the purpose of enhancing Siri’s capabilities, and the company is continuously developing technologies to further bolster Siri’s privacy features.
Apple emphasized that all Siri-collected data undergoes an anonymization process, ensuring that it cannot be linked to specific users. Furthermore, this data is not sold but rather used exclusively to improve Siri’s functionality. It is important to note that Siri’s recording feature is disabled by default, and users have the option to enable it if they choose.
