March 31, 2026 – Bill Gates recently made an appearance at the Breakthrough Energy Ventures Investor Summit in Texas, where he shared his latest insights on the trajectory of global energy development, asserting that the next generation of power generation technologies is on the horizon.
Gates pointed out that by 2050, the global demand for electricity is projected to triple compared to the current levels. For the economy to achieve decarbonization, numerous sectors that currently rely on fossil fuels must transition to electrification. This underscores the growing significance of developing and implementing new power generation technologies.

The global power system is currently undergoing a diverse and innovative transformation. In the European Union, for the first time, the combined output of wind and solar power has surpassed that of fossil fuels. Additionally, TerraPower, the energy company founded by Gates, has received approval to build a nuclear reactor project in Wyoming, marking a series of breakthroughs in the energy sector.
During the summit, Gates highlighted three next-generation power generation technologies that are currently in the spotlight.
Geothermal power generation has witnessed technological advancements. Fervo, a company in this field, has employed ultra-deep drilling and horizontal extended drilling techniques, enabling geothermal power generation to break free from geographical constraints. Their pilot project has been generating electricity steadily, and a brand-new geothermal power plant is set to come online within the year.
Nuclear fusion, regarded as a nearly inexhaustible source of clean energy, has seen progress in two major technical approaches: the tokamak and the stellarator. Several companies have made steady progress in their research and development projects, with the potential for commercialization within the next decade.
Geological hydrogen, a surprising discovery in the energy realm, is a zero-emission energy source naturally produced by the Earth. Reserves have been found in multiple countries. Although still in the early stages of research and development, its potential is immense.
These three technologies are progressing at different paces. The commercialization timeline for geological hydrogen remains uncertain, while nuclear fusion and geothermal power generation have entered a phase of rapid development.
Gates expressed great optimism about these developments. He believes that in the coming decades, at least one of these technologies will become a crucial component of the global power supply. Moreover, the simultaneous breakthroughs across multiple technical routes will be essential in meeting the enormous future demand for electricity.
