TikTok Gets Another Reprieve: Fourth Extension Looms in U.S.

September 15, 2025 – According to Reuters, sources familiar with the matter have revealed that the Trump administration is expected to once again extend the deadline for ByteDance to divest its TikTok business in the United States. Earlier, the U.S. government had demanded that ByteDance complete this divestment by September 17 of this year.

This would mark the fourth time that U.S. President Trump has granted TikTok a reprieve. Under the original provisions of the U.S. “divest or be banned” law, ByteDance was required to sell TikTok’s U.S. operations by January 19, 2025, or face a shutdown in the United States. However, Trump has already extended the deadline three times, providing TikTok with additional time.

Last month, Trump indicated that there were American buyers interested in TikTok, and he might further extend the deadline.

As of the time of reporting, the White House had not immediately responded to requests for comment. Nevertheless, if TikTok ultimately receives another extension, it would suggest that the U.S. government is reluctant to shut down an app that boasts 170 million users in the United States.
