August 23, 2024 – According to a report by Kathmandu Post, the Nepalese government has lifted the ban on TikTok, which had been in place for nearly nine months.
Prithvi Subba Gurun, the Minister of Communications and Information Technology of Nepal, stated, “The government has decided to allow TikTok to resume operations, subject to certain conditions.”
In order to resume operations in Nepal, TikTok must now fulfill four conditions, which are summarized as follows:
Assist in promoting Nepal’s tourism industry.
Invest in digital literacy efforts.
Contribute to enhancing the public education system.
Regulate the language used on TikTok.
Gurun elaborated, “After TikTok assured the government that it would fulfill these conditions, we have decided in principle to allow TikTok to resume operations in Nepal.”
TikTok expressed satisfaction with Nepal’s decision to lift the ban.
Last November, the Nepalese government banned TikTok, citing that it was “undermining social harmony in Nepal.” This was followed by sporadic street protests as TikTok users felt the ban had cut off their source of income. According to the Internet Service Providers’ Association of Nepal, TikTok had 2.2 million users in the country at that time.
